This qist opens with Aqib staring at his friend Yasir’s face. Yasir asks which girl he means, and Aqib, trying to keep his voice steady, says it was Aina. The call came from a number that Yasir knows belongs to his own home, to Eman. There was only one sob on the line, Aqib says, and then the number was switched off. “Tum pagal ho gaye ho?” Yasir replies. Maybe the children were playing with the phone, he says, and Aqib’s ears are only hearing what his heart wants. But Aqib insists: first silence, then a sob, and the phone has been off ever since. For him, the doubt is enough to become certainty.

So Yasir nervously dials Eman. She is busy and in a hurry, and she explains that the number is on the children’s mobile. They took it yesterday, it has died, and it was not working anyway. Yasir quietly thanks Allah, smiles and puts the phone down. “Lo sun lo,” he tells Aqib, a little angry now. One call, probably a child’s mischief, and Aqib decided it was Aina. This is going too far, he says.

Aqib asks him not to be angry. For a moment, he says, he felt a hope as if he had found his life again, and then he asks Yasir why he is so sure Aina is gone, when he was not even in the city when she left. Pakeeza Tayyaba keeps this episode short and tense, built on a friendship, a loss that has not healed and the one small sound that brings it all back.

امید کی ایک ہلکی سی آواز بھی ٹوٹے دل کو پھر سے دھڑکنا سکھا دیتی ہے۔
