“Kaun?” Asfandyar whispers in fear. Night is falling and he is sitting alone in his room, because there is no one else at home. His mother, Sabiha Begum, has gone to a funeral and has still not come back. His father has worked abroad for years and only visits Pakistan every two or three years. Asfandyar is their only, much-loved child, and ever since his grandmother passed away he feels very alone, and very scared whenever the house is empty.

Tonight it is the same. He hears footsteps and steps out, but no one is there. He keeps calling his mama, but she does not pick up. Suddenly a strong gust of wind throws the closed window wide open. Trembling, he hides under his blanket and feels that someone is in the room with him. He begins reciting Ayat-ul-Kursi and the footsteps seem to move back. When he finally peeks out from under the blanket towards the window, he sees a hand dripping with blood, and fear leaves him completely silent.

The window keeps banging open and shut. When he gathers the courage to look again, there is nothing, only the branches of a thick tree swaying in the storm, and he tells himself it was a wehem. Then there is a knock at the door. Thinking his mother is back, he runs to it, but no one answers when he calls out, and he rushes back to his room. He locks the window and drinks some water, and the knocking starts again, now with his mother’s voice: “Asfandyar beta, darwaza kholo.” With shaking steps and a racing heart he asks, “Mama, aap hain?”, and slowly opens the door. Dr Hadiqa Hassan builds the fear one small sound at a time.
