About this novel
Dastan e Junoon (Urdu: داستانِ جنون) by Hamna Mohsin is a short, intense Urdu romance about a college bully and the girl who slaps him. Faisal has never been told no, until Anaya, a first-year student, slaps him in front of the whole college.
The novel opens in the middle of his anger. Anaya’s phone has been off for two hours, and for Faisal that’s enough: he grabs his car keys, certain he’ll find her wherever she is. “Ab tum nahi bachogi, Anaya.” Then Hamna Mohsin goes back to show how it started.
Faisal runs his own gang at college. Larna, maar peet, dhons jamana: fighting and pushing people around are what he enjoys most. On Anaya’s very first day, his friend Saad points her out, and Faisal follows her with a lie. He says he dropped his wallet there, with his ATM card and thirty thousand rupees in it, and hints that she might know where it went. Anaya, furious at being called a thief, slaps him in front of a crowd of students. Everyone who saw it knows she has made a big mistake.
ایک تھپڑ، اور پھر ایک ایسا جنون جو کسی حد کو نہیں مانتا۔
For a few days Faisal doesn’t come to college at all, and Anaya starts to relax and focus on her studies. Then one morning she goes to class with a high fever, her friend Rabia sends her home early, and on an empty road a car with black windows pulls up and drags her inside. She wakes in a large, soundproof room, banging on the door and begging someone to let her out.
It’s a 159-page novel that moves fast. If you like stories about junooni heroes, kidnapping and a heroine who won’t bend, this one is for you.
