About this novel
Tawaif by Hamna Tanveer is a bold, dramatic Urdu novel set partly in the world of a kotha and its hidden lives. It follows a powerful man named Shah, a dancer who captures every eye, and the judgements society passes on women like her.
The novel opens with a popular song playing as the background to the first scene, and the setting is clear from the start. Shah walks in, taking in the room with a sharp glance. Young women are dancing to the music under dim lights, with darkness all around and soft lights glowing and fading. The writer calls it a dreamlike atmosphere.
Shah takes his special seat. His deep eyes are fixed on the beauty dancing in the middle of the room. He always sees something in her eyes that he cannot quite understand. Around him, the so-called respectable men of society are lost in her dance: some throwing money, some drinking.
Shah sits back calmly against a cushion and watches her properly for the first time. Hamna Tanveer describes her in vivid detail: long brown hair falling past her waist, magical brown eyes under thick lashes, milky skin, carefully done make-up and an outfit that adds to the drama of the night. Then Shah’s face turns serious. Three lines crease his forehead as a drunk man stumbles towards the dancer. Shah, who until now was only watching with interest, is suddenly paying close attention to what happens next.
From this charged opening, Tawaif promises a story about power, protection, hidden pain and whether the world ever sees the person behind the label. It is a mature drama for readers who enjoy intense, emotional stories with strong characters.
دنیا صرف نام دیتی ہے، دل کا حال کوئی نہیں پوچھتا۔
