The story opens at a lively wedding. Guests in their finest clothes fill the hall with chatter and laughter, and couples move around arm in arm. On the stage, though, the new bride sits silently with her eyes lowered. Her face is beautifully made up, but sadness has settled over it, and she seems to be living in a world of her own, unaware of the celebration around her.

Not far away, Ehsan keeps chasing his wife Ana for a couple photo. Ana is having too much fun to stand still. They’ve been married four months, she reminds him; the honeymoon is over and their marriage is “old” now. Ehsan pretends to be shocked that it got old so quickly, and their teasing gives the opening a warm, funny touch.

Pakeeza Tayyab sets one happy couple beside one unhappy bride, and over many hundreds of pages she follows the relationships that grow out of this family gathering, with plenty of romance, misunderstandings and emotion along the way.
