Wajood e Laraib By Mehwish Bint E Zahid

About this novel

Wajood e Laraib (Urdu: وجودِ لاریب) by Mehwish Bint e Zahid is an Urdu novel about a woman, the husband who hurt her, and their son. Asad begs Areesha to marry him again, for her sake and for their son Hadi, and she reminds him of the ten years he made her suffer.

“Areesha, ruko!” Asad’s eyes are wet as he asks her, for Allah’s sake, to forgive him; he says he is incomplete without her and Hadi. Areesha turns on him. He refused to do nikah with her despite all her pleading, she says, knowing full well what that meant, and now that he has ruined her life he has come asking for maafi. She tells him she and Hadi don’t need him at all, takes the boy’s hand and walks off down the road, crying.

دس سال کی اذیت کے بعد ایک معافی، مگر کیا دیر نہیں ہو گئی؟

Then the novel goes back. Asad is twenty-eight, from one of the richest jagirdar families of his village. His grandfather was a famous wrestler, and his family has seen its share of violence. Asad chose a different road: he has a PhD, he is quiet and serious, he rises for fajr, and he unwinds at his farmhouse among gardens and animals. He founded the Pak Colleges, which spread across Pakistan within three years.

Areesha is the only daughter of Afnan Malik, a well-known businessman. After FSc she joins Pak College for her BS Honours. Her Tai Ami comes asking for her hand for her son Ali, a CSP officer who has loved Areesha since childhood. The engagement is held at a hotel and the ring is engraved A&A, but the writer warns that it caught someone’s evil eye and ended terribly.

So the questions pile up from the first pages: what happened to the engagement with Ali, how did Asad come into her life, and why did he refuse her? It’s 164 pages and moves quickly.
