The chapter, “Baab Awwal,” begins with a long poem by the writer, and every verse ends with the same refrain: “kyunke mohabbat wajdan hai.” Love, she writes, is where life begins. It walks with every breath on the journey of smiles. It can lift a person from the lowest point to great heights, and it can also bring them crashing down. Love does not let ego survive, it teaches the art of sacrifice, and it turns our struggles into worship and our prayers into one centre. This poem sets the tone for the whole novel.

Then we meet Aqib on the phone with his mother, Shafaq Begum. He is about to leave the office and asks if she needs anything. She tells him she only wants him to stop getting lost in his thoughts and to reach his sister’s house on time to give her his love and blessings. “Mama, naraz to nahin hain?” he asks helplessly, and she answers softly that she is not angry, just a mother who worries about him all the time. A faint smile appears and disappears on his lips as he promises to be ready in twenty minutes.

After hanging up, Aqib stands like a man who has lost everything. In a quiet moment of thought he speaks to someone who is not there: perhaps people are trying to put limits on him now, but he will never let that happen, and she cannot leave his heart, not even by an inch. When he gets home, the house is in chaos with preparations, and his sister greets him with relief, “Shukar hai aap aa gaye Bhai.” Pakeeza Tayyaba opens the story with longing and sets up the pain that drives the later episodes.
