Rafaqtin Qurbatin Manzalin (Urdu: رفاقتیں قربتیں منزلیں) by Pakeeza Tayyab is a long family romance about marriage, closeness and the journeys couples make together. The title means “companionships, closeness, destinations”. It opens in the middle of a busy wedding function.

The hall is packed. Women in their best clothes walk arm in arm with their husbands, and everyone is laughing and chatting, except the bride. She sits on the stage with her head bowed, scratching at her nails, her face made up but heavy with sadness. Lost in her own world, she doesn’t seem to notice anything going on around her.

Meanwhile Ehsan follows his wife Ana around, pleading with her to have a couple photo taken. Ana flits about like a butterfly, telling him she has no time. They have been married four months, she says; it’s the brother’s big day now, and their own reception is only being held alongside as a family formality. “Already old?” Ehsan asks in mock shock. The rituals are done, the honeymoon period was long enough, Ana replies, so the marriage isn’t going to stay new and fresh forever. Ehsan can only grin at his beautifully dressed, slightly cross wife.

That playful married couple stands in sharp contrast to the silent bride on the stage. With more than a thousand pages, Pakeeza Tayyab has room for several marriages and family relationships to unfold, and the first scene leaves you curious about what the new bride is hiding.
