Tum Mere Ho by Feriha Iqbal is a long Urdu family romance set in a big joint household, and it opens on a painful night. From there it moves into lively everyday family life, full of cousins, quarrels and slowly growing love.

The novel begins with harsh words and a slap. A girl named Naznin is told that in three days she will be someone’s mankooha, and she is warned never to use such words again. Her pride is broken, and she lies awake in a dim room, crying and unable to understand why her parents have suddenly agreed to something that has turned her dreams upside down. Sitting against the headboard with her knees pulled up, she complains silently to her Rab about the dream that has been snatched from her.

The next morning, the story moves to the breakfast table of a large, noisy family. Salma Begum tells her 22-year-old daughter Shanaya to eat properly before leaving, while Shanaya complains that she is always being rushed. The aunts chat about whether Bhabi Naznin is up yet, and the younger cousins tease each other over food.

Then Aslam Sahab turns to his younger son, Zuhair, and asks what he plans to do now. Zuhair innocently pretends he doesn’t understand, which makes his father even angrier, and the rest of the table quietly smiles. University has been over for six months, Aslam Sahab says, and it is time to come to the office and help his father. Zuhair suggests his elder brother is already there full-time, and he would rather enjoy his free days a little longer, winking at his brother Hashir. Hashir promises their father that Zuhair will start tomorrow, everyone heads off to work, and the household’s warm, joking energy is set against Naznin’s quiet heartbreak. Feriha Iqbal sets up a love story that clearly starts in pain.
