About this novel
Meri Zindagi Ho Tum (Urdu: میری زندگی ہو تم) by Noor Malik is a long, complete Urdu family romance set in the city of Islamabad. It moves between the wealthy, strong-willed Shah family and a hard-working girl who supports her parents, until their worlds collide.
The novel opens on an October morning, with a light chill in the air and the sun rising over the Margalla Hills. In a posh area of the city stands Shah House, built by Tahseen Shah, who had two sons. Sikandar Shah, the elder, married his cousin Khadija Begum; he is a short-tempered man with a commanding personality, but his anger melts in front of his wife. Khadija Begum is an educated woman who devoted herself to her husband and children after marriage.
Sikandar Shah has two children. Taimoor Shah has inherited his father’s temper – arrogant and quick to anger – with one extra habit: he looks down on people below his status. He married his university friend Mehak, someone Khadija Begum never quite warmed to. Mehak spends much of her time out of the house; Taimoor had believed she would change after their child, but she hasn’t. His sister, Alizay Shah, is a cheerful, mischievous girl whose shararat has made everyone fond of her. Tahseen Shah’s younger son, Sarfraz Shah, married his cousin Shazia, and their only son Bilal Shah is studying in New York – as easygoing as Taimoor is fiery.
ایک طرف غرور بھرا شاہ ہاؤس، دوسری طرف ماں باپ کا سہارا بنی بریرہ۔
Far from that mansion, in an ordinary Islamabad home, Fakhra Begum wakes her daughter Bareera, reminding her she has to go to the office. Bareera is the only, much-loved daughter of Adnan Sahib and Fakhra. Everything changed last year when Adnan Sahib was paralysed in a car accident. Because his employers trusted him completely, they offered his job to his daughter. Bareera comes down, greets her parents with a smile, has breakfast and leaves for work, while her father quietly carries a pain he can’t put into words.
Noor Malik introduces a large cast with care, and the contrast between the proud Taimoor Shah and the self-respecting Bareera hints at the clash – and romance – to come.
