Piya Ke Iqrar Rang Niraly By Noor Malik

About this novel

Piya Ke Iqrar Rang Niraly (Urdu: پیا کے اقرار رنگ نرالے) by Noor Malik is an Urdu romance that opens at a famous kotha in a village in Gujrat. On an October night Haseena Bai is preparing her most beautiful dancer, Neelofar, for a powerful guest, and nothing goes as planned.

By ten o’clock on an October night, ordinary places have gone dark. But some places are just waking up, Noor Malik writes, and this is one of them: a kotha so well known that ministers come from far away for its evening mehfils. Run by Haseena Bai, it looks like a palace from outside, with old stone walls, heavy steel doors, a long winding corridor with fountains in the shape of peacocks, and black marble stairs under a red carpet.

کوٹھے کی رنگین رات، ایک سردار کا انتظار، اور ایک رقاصہ کی بیزار آنکھیں۔

Tonight everything has to be perfect, because Sardar Mohtashim and his friends are coming. Haseena Bai sweeps in wearing a silk sari, checking every detail: the gold velvet carpet, the cushions, the drinks, her own takht, the musicians, the great white chandelier under which the “queen of beauty”, Neelofar, will dance. She calls for Pinki, the maid, and the two go to see whether Neelofar is ready, because tonight only a moon-like face will do.

Pinki stops at the door: “Mashallah, chashm-e-bad-door!” Neelofar sits before the mirror in a deep red ghagra, heavy jewellery at her throat, a nose ring and a teeka on her forehead. When she sees them come in, she rolls her eyes with irritation and goes back to what she was doing. Haseena Bai lifts her chin and calls her a vision of beauty.

It’s a 741-page novel, and the title promises that love will change everything for someone in this world.
