The first light of dawn falls on Chaudhry House, and the whole place is busy. Aiman Begum is supervising an army of servants and checking every detail herself. She asks the old maid whether Hooria’s room has been cleaned exactly the way Hooria likes it, then tells her to wake Wahab, or he’ll be late for the airport. When she goes to his room herself, she finds him already dressed. “Chhoti Maa,” he smiles, “Hooria’s flight is about to land. When do I go to fetch her?”

Wahab teasingly tells Aiman Begum not to worry, he’s just going to bring the queen of his life, and walks out with a grin, leaving her shaking her head. Nine years ago Hooria insisted on going to America to study, and now that she’s returning, the house is full of life again. Wahab and Basir sahib set off for the airport. In those nine years, the writer tells us, Wahab grew very close to Hooria. Even far away, she never went a day without talking to him, she understands the depth of every bond, and Wahab keeps all his relationships close to his heart.
