The Vampire Adyan Part 3 (Urdu: دی ویمپائر ادیان) by Tahbeer Khan continues her Urdu vampire series with the next generation of the family. Its hero is Adyan, the son of Aaron and Zalfa, whose powers turn out to be far stronger than his father’s.

The novel opens on the night Adyan is due to leave for the UK. His flight is at nine, and Zalfa can’t settle. Her heart won’t accept sending her son so far away, and she asks Aaron to stop him – there are good universities here too. Aaron gently reminds her that Adyan is twenty now, and that he himself wants his son to study in the UK, just as he did. He had even suggested Zalfa go along, but she refuses to go anywhere without Aaron. When the university closes for holidays, he says, Adyan can visit them or they can visit him.

Zalfa’s real worry is something else: ever since Adyan learned about his powers, she has been afraid of what he might do with them. They have warned him again and again never to misuse them. The story then goes back to show how those powers first appeared, when Adyan was only around ten. One day Zalfa called him from the bedroom while he was playing in the lawn, and in the blink of an eye he was standing in front of her. Even Adyan didn’t understand how he got there so fast – but his face stayed calm, as if fear simply wasn’t part of his nature.

He was never an ordinary child. He didn’t mix easily with people, his IQ was far above other children’s and he covered two classes in a single year. Another day Zalfa cut her hand while cooking, and when Adyan saw the blood his eyes turned a black-and-golden shade. She was frightened for a moment. Aaron’s vampire powers had only appeared at twenty-two, but Adyan’s had come in childhood – which meant he would be a much more powerful vampire than his father. Sweet and intelligent, he was also very hard to handle when angry, and once, when Aaron was late for a promised outing, Adyan’s eyes changed colour and he vanished from the room like a gust of wind.

Tahbeer Khan blends family love, fantasy and suspense, and readers who followed Aaron’s story will enjoy seeing his son take centre stage.
