Wo Ashiqui Hy Meri (Urdu: وہ عاشقی ہے میری) by Malisha Rana is an intense, dark romance about a marriage built on obsession and fear. It opens in the hardest possible way: a man walks into his room and finds his wife lying unconscious on the floor, two hours after he beat her in a fit of rage.

Now that his anger has passed, the sight of her terrifies him. He calls her his “jaan”, tries desperately to bring her round, and begs her to forgive him. He swears he can’t live without her, holds her to his chest and keeps talking as if his words could undo what he did. When she finally opens her eyes and sees him, she presses herself against the headboard, shaking with fear, her lips moving with words too faint to hear.

This is not a gentle love story. Malisha Rana puts the reader inside a relationship where a man’s love and his violence come from the same place, and where his wife’s fear is plain on every page.
