About this novel
Tu Meri Zindagi Hai (Urdu: تو میری زندگی ہے) by Malisha Rana is a complete Urdu romance about two loving sisters, Dua and little Eli. It opens with a haunting nightmare and then settles into the tender bond of two girls raised by their father after their mother’s death.
The novel begins with a girl running for her life, not looking back, when a scream stops her: “Aapi!” She turns and runs back – and finds her sister lying on the ground, covered in blood. “Aapi, open your eyes, please… nothing will happen to you, we’ll get out of here right now… Aapi, please, I’ll die without you!” She sobs and calls out, but there is no answer except broken breaths, and then her sister leaves her alone. “Let go of me – don’t touch me – Aapi, help me!” she screams – and wakes up drenched in sweat. This dream, the writer tells us, has haunted this unnamed girl for six months – ever since her sister died – and who she is remains a mystery at first.
The scene then shifts. “Aapi, Aapi!” Eli bangs on Dua’s door. “Come in, Eli.” Eli rushes in: she saw something huge flying in the sky outside the window – a helicopter, she insists! She grabs Dua’s hands, frightened, because that’s exactly what she’s been scared of ever since watching horror movies with Dua; she’s a scaredy-cat who has started sleeping in her sister’s room. Dua laughs and reminds her how many times she’s told her that things like that don’t happen in real life – it was just a movie. But Eli is sure: if she hadn’t come to Aapi, it would have grabbed her and carried her off – and since everything about her is so cute, it would have eaten her up whole!
ایک ڈراؤنا خواب، ایک ڈری ہوئی چھوٹی بہن، اور بہن کا بے پناہ پیار۔
Dua smiles and assures her that no helicopter can come here now. “Because now I’m with you, and I’m sure you won’t let anything happen to me,” Eli says, hugging her and falling asleep, while Dua strokes her hair until sleep takes her too. The writer then explains that Faisal Sahib has two daughters: Dua and, six years younger, Alisha (Eli). When Eli was just two years old, their mother passed away, and Dua – herself still a child – raised Eli like a mother. Faisal Sahib and Dua have always kept every worry and pain away from Eli, and the two of them are her whole world.
Malisha Rana writes with emotion and mystery, and the title – “you are my life” – sums up the love between these sisters.
