About this novel
Cinderella (Urdu: سنڈریلا) by Salman is an Urdu retelling of the classic fairy tale, with changes that make it a novel of its own. It opens with a poem about a world full of colour and fragrance, until storms arrive and scatter everyone’s dreams.
The story begins on a stormy night. Thunder rolls, rain pours down, and in a big, lonely house a little girl watches her mother die. With her last breath her mother says sorry: she is leaving her daughter alone. The child doesn’t fully understand. She shakes her mother’s lifeless body and cries until sleep finally takes her, and the house has never felt so empty.
ایک طوفانی رات، ماں کی جدائی — اور ایک ننھی سنڈریلا کی کہانی کا آغاز۔
Her father, a successful merchant who travels abroad for months at a time, loves Cinderella deeply. He rushed home when he heard of his wife’s death, but his work won’t wait, and he worries about leaving his daughter alone. So he decides to marry again: a widow with two daughters of Cinderella’s own age. He believes he has found her a mother and two sisters. Once the new family is settled, he goes abroad again, leaving his daughter in the care of her stepmother. The writer also places the story against a backdrop of history, with Britain and France at war and trade disrupted.
Salman’s version keeps the heart of the fairy tale, a kind, lonely girl, a cold stepfamily and the hope of something better, while giving it his own twists and a more grown-up, emotional tone. It’s a good pick for readers who enjoy familiar stories told in a new way.
