I Am Crazy About You By Hamna Mehar

About this novel

I Am Crazy About You by Hamna Mehar is a very long romantic Urdu novel that opens with longing and then rewinds to happier, noisier days. Its first lines are a short poem about hanging on the cross of waiting, startled by every sound, and living only on the hope that a life partner will return.

Then we meet a young wife sitting alone on the lawn on a cold, windy winter evening. Every day at dusk she comes out here, because her husband always came home by evening. This time he promised to come back, and he hasn’t. She once lost herself in his memories completely. Now tears roll down her face, and nothing in the world matters except him. If he could see her like this, he would leave every important piece of work and come straight to her side. Night falls, and still she sits there, wrapped in the memories of the days they spent apart, holding on to everything he ever told her.

انتظار کی سولی پہ لٹکی ہوں — لوٹ آؤ اے ہمسفر۔

After that aching opening, the novel turns lively. A carefree college girl is in a hurry to leave the breakfast table to see her friends, while her mother calls her back to finish eating and complains about the driver uncle waiting outside. In the college van her friends Raeha and Mishal are waiting impatiently. Raeha teases her for always being late, and the three settle into the easy, quarrelsome chatter of best friends.

With more than a thousand pages, Hamna Mehar has room for a big story of friendship, family and love. The contrast between the waiting wife and the giggling college girl makes you wonder how one life becomes the other. The title says how deep that love will go.
