Muhabbatein Chahtein Shiddatein by Pakeeza Tayyaba is a long, lively Urdu family romance set in the big Siddiqui household. It is full of cousins, nok-jhok and deep feelings, and love grows slowly among all the family noise.

The novel opens in a panic. “Ahsan, phone uthao, jaldi please!” A girl is desperately calling Ahsan, who is fast asleep and not picking up. In half an hour her paper starts, the driver has gone to the village today, and she is completely stuck. “Oh my God, please help me!” She paces up and down, calling again and again and grumbling at both Ahsan and the driver.

Just then, Aslam Sahab walks in and asks why his beti looks so worried. When she explains, he gently teases her: InshaAllah her paper will go well, and if not, he will drop her at university himself. She is doing her master’s in psychology, and today is her final paper. Her patience runs out and tears start rolling down, and she complains that she has been calling Ahsan forever but he isn’t picking up. Aslam Sahab reminds her, laughing, that he has told her many times to learn to drive. She says she doesn’t need to, because everyone is always there to drive her, and he smiles, saying he would drop her himself but knows his niece never goes anywhere alone.

Pakeeza Tayyaba then introduces the Siddiqui family tree. Mirza Siddiqui Ahmed Sahab has three children. The eldest, Aslam Ahmed, has three sons: Zeeshan, Ahsan and Jahan. The second, Irshad Sahab, has four children: his elder daughter Ana, two sons Adil and Amir from his second wife, and Fatima, a daughter from that wife’s first marriage, whom Irshad Sahab loves as his own. The youngest is a daughter, Amna. Both brothers run the family business. Finally Ahsan picks up, and she tells him to wake up, rush to Siddiqui House and drop her at university. It is a busy, cheerful start to a big family saga.
