The novel opens with a desperate cry. Someone is begging to be let go, insisting she has committed no sin. Is it a crime to love? Love is ibadat, not gunah, so how can she be thrown into hell as punishment for it? Allah Himself loved His beloved Prophet (PBUH), she pleads. Then Parishay wakes up screaming and sits up, wondering whether it was just a dream or a punishment for some sin.

Chanda Ali then introduces her. Parishay is the only daughter of her parents, very beautiful, bright and a top student at college. She has only one real friend, Naqsha, and with everyone else she keeps things polite and distant. Naqsha is also very pretty and clever, and the two are lively, cheerful friends who share a lot of mischief. One thing about Naqsha surprises Parishay: Naqsha wears a full burqa and walks with her head and eyes lowered, while Parishay only wears a dupatta. To Parishay, it seems strange that wearing the burqa alone should count as fulfilling the duty of purdah.

One day, while chatting, Parishay suddenly feels as if someone is watching her. She looks around but sees no one. The feeling returns the next day and keeps returning, and slowly it becomes part of her routine. A few months pass, and then one day, when Naqsha is away for her cousin’s wedding in Islamabad, Parishay has to go to college alone. At a turn in the road she sees a young man standing ahead. Her heart starts racing as he walks straight up to her, greets her, introduces himself as Aman Ali and tells her he has noticed her for a long time. Nervous, Parishay asks him to let her pass because she is late, and hurries away. The writer sets up a thoughtful story about love, faith, modesty and the choices we make.
