About this novel
Haan Main Baaghi Hoon by Salman is a powerful Urdu social novel about poverty, feudal cruelty and the courage it takes to stand up against injustice. Read it online or download the complete PDF free on Crazy Fans of Novels.
The first chapter is called “Kho Gayin Meri Sab Pehchanein,” and it opens at dawn. Thin rays of sunlight break through a cluster of trees, and the writer describes it as a small rebellion of morning against night. A soft breeze makes the leaves dance as if they were celebrating, the birds start singing, and the people of a caravan camped among the trees wake up to the good news of a new day.
That peace does not last. Suddenly there are screams: “Chor do meri beti ko!” Two men are dragging a girl away by her hands while her mother runs after them, begging and crying, but no one in the village dares to help.
In another part of the village, a small boy named Amr, from a very poor family, is driving a donkey cart. Salman paints him with warmth: a five-year-old with a stubborn donkey and a ragged look, greeting an old farmer who asks how he is. Meanwhile the mother keeps begging the men in the name of Allah. One of them pushes her away so hard that her head hits a tree and starts bleeding, but she gets up and runs after them again.
The men take the girl to a car. A young man in a smart sherwani and dark glasses steps out with an older man, and the mother falls at the old man’s feet, pleading for her daughter. The old man coldly says that his son has fallen for her daughter and the nikah will happen, then fires a pistol into the air to silence everyone. From its first pages, the novel makes it clear that its title is a promise: someone in this village is going to say, “Haan, main baaghi hoon.”
ظلم کے سامنے خاموش رہنا بھی ظلم ہے، اور آواز اٹھانا بغاوت نہیں، ہمت ہے۔
