The novel opens beyond our earth, a little above the clouds, inside whirlpools of fire where the jinnat live. It is a tilismi world we cannot even imagine, with its own customs and ways of living. Like humans, Salman writes, some jinn follow Rahman and some follow Shaitan. One day the Shah of the jinn orders his guards to bring his only daughter, Princess Talsum Araa, a being so beautiful that her husn can cast a spell on anyone.
In court, her father is furious. She had been ordered to guard the family’s magical chiragh, and she failed. Talsum Araa explains that she protected it carefully, but evil jinn used trickery to take it. The Shah reminds her how important that lamp was for their survival. She bows her head and asks for whatever punishment he chooses, and it is a terrible one: all her magical powers will be taken away, and she will be locked in a tomb for the next hundred years. She begs, “Abba Huzoor, yeh saza bohat bari hai,” but his decision is final. The guards bind her with magic ropes, the Shah draws every power out of her body with a single breath, and she is buried alive in the tomb of a Firaun, with an order that no jinn should ever try to free her.
Then the story jumps to our world. In a museum at night, an old baba ji is telling a group of young visitors the story of a witch. One of them stands up angrily and says he does not believe in jinn or churails at all, while his friend Sohaib tells him to hear the whole story first. The others sit around the baba in candlelight, waiting to hear what comes next.
