The story opens outside a university, where Marah calls after Waila, catches her hand and apologises, and the two best friends drive home together. Waila is the only daughter of a very rich family, full of mischief and life. Marah comes from a more modest home, but the difference never touched their friendship, and the whole university knows them as inseparable. Marah’s fiancé, Arad, studies in the same class, yet she still spends most of her time with Waila.

Waila believes in stars and fortunes, and she drags a reluctant Marah to a kahin baba. The old man looks at her star and says that something big is about to happen in Waila’s life very soon. Marah is worried and keeps telling her friend not to believe such things. A week later Waila’s family plans a holiday abroad by ship, and she is so excited she starts packing at once. Marah comes to see her off.

On the third night at sea, the captain warns of a storm. It hits so hard that the ship rocks wildly and people are thrown overboard, Waila among them. She wakes up in a small hut on a bed of dry grass, and a very handsome young man walks in. He tells her he found her on the shore of a small island where hardly anyone ever comes. He speaks little, smiles a lot and brings her fresh fruit, and for two days Waila cannot stop looking at him. Then she wakes up on the beach with her family’s ship nearby and her parents holding her. When she tries to show them where she stayed, there is no hut and no boy, only a heart that keeps searching for him.
