About this afsana

Obaash Larki by Salman is a very short Urdu story, just two pages long, written as a hard-hitting social warning. It is about blind trust, emotional blackmail and the cruel way society judges a woman.

Salman calls it a “mukhtasar magar jaame tehreer,” a short but complete piece, and it moves quickly. Asad tells Manzah that he wants to “test” her love. When she asks what he means, he demands a sacrifice that no one who truly loves would ever ask for. Manzah takes two days to think. On one side is her love; on the other is her own honour and her parents’ dignity. In the end, out of fear of losing him, she gives in.

The ending is the whole point of the story. The man who demanded proof of love immediately turns on her, calls her the very names the title uses, and walks away, saying he could never marry a girl like her. The next day, the writer tells us, the story ends in a tragedy for her. The final line is bitter and deliberate: the girl the world calls “obaash” lost everything because she trusted the wrong person, while the man who used her walks free.

It is not a romance but a warning, written to make readers think about the double standards our society applies to men and women, and about how “love” can be used as a weapon. Read it as a lesson: real love never asks you to give up your self-respect, and anyone who does is not worth trusting.

A note for readers: this story deals with emotional abuse and ends in a tragedy. If you or someone you know is going through something similar, please talk to a trusted family member, friend or counsellor. You are not alone, and no one’s words decide your worth.

سچی محبت کبھی عزت کی قربانی نہیں مانگتی۔
