Tera Deewana By H Hoor

About this novel

Tera Deewana (Urdu: تیرا دیوانہ) by H Hoor is an Urdu novel that begins on the day Sarim and Dareena divorce, with their newborn daughter. She lies wrapped in a white blanket, and neither of her parents wants her.

The first lines are Sarim’s: when he breaks a tie, he breaks it completely. Dareena screams that she won’t live with him a day longer. Sarim says he gave up everything for an ignorant woman like her, and that he doesn’t even want to see the baby’s face. Send her to an orphanage, he says. H. Hoor explains how it came to this: a whirlwind marriage after three meetings, a wife who loved going out, and a husband whose “Asian man” rules soon bored her. Then came a child who arrived while they were busy hiding how tired they were of each other.

ماں باپ نے ٹھکرا دیا، مگر قسمت نے اسے ایک نیا گھر دے دیا۔

The baby is saved by Samia, Dareena’s foster sister, who calls as soon as she hears the girl is going to an orphanage and asks to adopt her. Years pass. The little girl is now Ayat, eleven years old today, with brown hair, large eyes and a habit of making friends with everyone. Samia, who has an ordinary job, watches her play in the lawn from the window before going to cook dinner.

Then a new voice takes over through the pages of a diary: “Mera naam Azaan hai.” He’s a Pathan, heir to the biggest haveli in Quetta, sent by his mother to study at a school in a poorer city. He’s thirteen, knows he’s good-looking, and keeps away from girls on principle. How his story and Ayat’s cross is what the novel is about.

It’s a 230-page novel that starts with a broken family and becomes a story about where you belong.
