Main Jo Hari Tujh Py Channa (Urdu: میں جو ہاری تجھ پہ چنا) by Noor Malik is a very long Urdu novel about Mehru, a girl her own family calls unlucky. Her family in Karachi calls her manhoos, yet she quietly keeps going in spite of them, waiting for her life to change.

It’s a scorching Karachi morning in a small middle-class house, where earning a living is hard and everyone starts work early. Aizaz Begum lays out breakfast and calls the children. The eldest son is dressed for work and his two sisters sit down smiling. Then Mehru’s voice is heard, and the whole table’s mood changes. “Whose unlucky face have we seen first thing this morning,” Aizaz Begum says, looking at her as if she could devour her.

One by one, the others pile on. Her elder brother says now he won’t get the job, and storms off. Her Dadi says she has lost her appetite just from seeing her and goes to her room. Her father, Abdul Haq Sahib, says only God knows how today will go: their lives have been ruined since the day she was born. Her sister complains that she couldn’t even wait until they’d all left.

When Mehru tries to speak, her mother seizes her by the hair, forces food into her mouth until she can hardly breathe, and pushes her to the floor. Mehru wipes her tears, picks up her bag and leaves for university. Noor Malik adds the detail that hurts most: Mehru topped her college and won a scholarship, and not one person at home said a kind word.

It’s an enormous read, 1,692 pages in this PDF, for readers who like long family dramas with a heroine who suffers but doesn’t give up.
