About this novel
Ab E Kousar (Urdu: آبِ کوثر) by Talat Rabab is a long Urdu spy thriller about an extraordinary young woman who works as a secret agent. The writer introduces her before the story begins: a photographic memory, a mind no machine can scan, and the world’s best hacking skills.
The first scene drops you straight into danger. On a burning July morning, a black Honda Civic tears down a busy road, the girl at the wheel pressing the accelerator as if her life depends on it. Breathing hard, she grabs her phone and dials her father. “Baba, he’s following me again. Please do something. Today he has a gun.” You can hear the fear in her voice.
ایک لڑکی، ایک کمپیوٹر — اور پورے ملک کی سکیورٹی داؤ پر۔
Then the scale of the story opens up. Across Pakistan, internet and mobile services suddenly go dead. Officers of the intelligence and security agencies sit with their heads in their hands: someone has hacked all their data and locked every database. Helicopters circle while the control room tries every frequency, and software experts work desperately on recovery, all in vain. Then, exactly twenty-five minutes later, everything comes back as if nothing had happened, without any damage. That is what frightens them most. Whoever did this could have done far worse, and they have to find that person, fast.
The next chapter moves to a quiet university department where students sit on the lawn with their notes, and you start to wonder which ordinary-looking face hides the girl from the first page. Talat Rabab mixes fast action, cyber-crime and national security, which makes this a good pick for readers who like jasoosi and agency stories.
