Mohabbat Ki Chaon By Ana Ilyas

About this novel

Mohabbat Ki Chaon (Urdu: محبت کی چھاؤں) by Ana Ilyas is an Urdu romance between a frightened university student and an army commando. It opens in the middle of an exam at Punjab University, when gunfire rips through the hall and a commando pulls Fehma out from behind the chairs.

Fehma, a Business Education student, is stuck on the last question of her paper in the IER hall, silently cursing her teacher and poking her friend Sara with a pencil for a hint. Then the shooting starts. Windows shatter, people scream and run, and Fehma is too frozen to move. She presses herself against the wall and pulls chairs in front of her as footsteps come closer. The man who finds her says gently that he isn’t a terrorist. He’s a commando; his force has taken control of the attackers; she should come with him. She grabs his arm and won’t stop shaking. Ana Ilyas notes that people in uniform make you feel safe, and Fehma feels exactly that.

دہشت کے لمحوں میں ملا ایک سہارا، اور وہیں سے شروع ہوئی کہانی۔

He leaves her in the dean’s office with the other students and reports to his senior on the phone: two attackers dead, two caught alive. The TV channels are already covering the attack by the time Fehma gets home, where her mother Kulsoom Begum holds her and cries. Fehma is her parents’ only child; her father Suleman Sahib is an ordinary government employee who has somehow managed to educate her. Sara, her rich new friend, has already gone home. Fehma keeps thinking about the commando who got her out. Then a phone rings somewhere else and a man named Zarad answers.

It’s 236 pages, an army-and-romance story that suits readers who like a fauji hero.
