About this novel

Wo Jo Qaraz Rakhty Thy Jaan Par (Urdu: وہ جو قرض رکھتے تھے جان پر) by Imran Liaqat is a short, complete Urdu novel about family, distance and duty. It begins with a man far from home, anxiously waiting for news of the birth of his first child.

In the opening pages Ahmad sits in an office thousands of miles away from Pakistan and checks his phone again and again. In the last twenty-five minutes he has picked it up countless times. The last time he spoke to his younger brother Ali, he was told not to worry – “hum sab yahan hain” – and the family took turns reassuring him all through the previous night. Still, the distance makes everything heavier. On top of that, the news coming out of Pakistan is grim, full of daily reports of horrible incidents and stories about hospitals and doctors’ negligence, so Ahmad can’t stop imagining the worst.

Unable to focus on his weekly report, he hears the call for Zuhr prayer. Ahmad admits to himself that he isn’t a regular namazi, but that day the azaan pulls him toward the nearby mosque. He prays with unusual devotion and then feels ashamed: a person remembers Allah when trouble comes and forgets Him as soon as it passes. He promises himself he will pray regularly from now on, knowing he has made such promises before.

پردیس میں بیٹھے بیٹے کے لیے ایک فون کال، اور زندگی کی سب سے بڑی خوشخبری۔

Walking back to the office, his phone vibrates. It’s his father: “Bohat bohat mubarak ho, Ahmad puttar! Allah Pak ne bara karam kiya hai – beta hua hai.” Relief floods through him. His wife Samra and the baby are both well; after a long, difficult wait of fifteen or sixteen hours the delivery went normally. Abba Jaan even reminds him that the azaan will be said in the baby’s ear.

Imran Liaqat writes this opening with warmth and honesty – faith, homesickness, family love and the guilt of being far away. The title, about those who carry a debt on their lives, hints that the story will go deeper than this happy moment.
