Veran Makan By Aymen Fatima

About this novel

Veeran Makaan by Aymen Fatima is a short Urdu horror novel about a mysterious girl and an empty house no one will rent. A family struggling to make ends meet moves in anyway, and the title means the deserted house.

In a short note, Aymen Fatima tells readers that this is her first novel and asks them to say whether she should keep writing. Then the story begins on a freezing December night. It is dark, a light rain is falling and a mysterious silence hangs everywhere. Even a falling leaf sends a shiver of fear through the air.

In this bitter cold, a girl is walking silently, staring at one fixed point. Strangely, she wears no shoes and no sweater, and it is three in the morning, yet she walks as if she has no fear at all, even though on such a cold, dark night anyone would be terrified. Her eyes hold a strange sadness that only adds to her beauty. She stops in front of the most beautiful house in the street. Its nameplate reads “Javed Malik.” She stares up at the lovely windows of the upper portion for a while. “Jahan mujhe basne nahin diya gaya, wahan main kisi ko basne nahin doon gi,” she says.

The story then moves into Javed Sahab’s home. His wife is angrily washing dishes and complaining loudly: how can this be? The house has been empty for four months and no decent tenant has come. Half their household expenses come from that rent, and the children’s school fees are paid from it. Javed Sahab works at a private firm. They have four children, two sons and two daughters, all in expensive schools, and they could manage if his wife, Rukhsana, didn’t love shopping and eating out so much. A family is finally coming to see the house tomorrow, and everyone hopes it will be rented. Aymen Fatima mixes family drama with a chilling mystery about what really lives in that empty portion.
