Tum Faqt Mere by Suhaira Awais

About this novel

Tum Faqt Mere (Urdu: تم فقط میرے) by Suhaira Awais is an intense Urdu romance that opens with a terrible accusation of murder. A grief-stricken man has his hands around Uqba’s throat, shouting that she killed his wife, and Uqba swears she would never have harmed her own sister.

“Let me go,” she begs in a faint voice, but he is beyond listening. His eyes are full of fury, and he is pouring all his pain into his grip, convinced that she is responsible for the death of the woman he loved. Tears stream down Uqba’s face as she struggles to breathe. When she finally loses consciousness, he lets her drop and storms out of the room. It’s a shocking first scene, and it leaves the reader desperate to know what really happened to her sister.

ایک الزام، ایک بہن کی موت — اور سچ ابھی چھپا ہے۔

Then the novel goes back to happier days. At university, Uqba stands outside her department, impatiently waiting for someone who is late as usual. Her friend Ghania teases her: “Patience, madam! Your prince always arrives late.” Uqba snaps back at her for talking nonsense, and Ghania warns her playfully not to be rude, or she’ll go and tell her “prince”. The light-hearted chatter of these scenes makes the opening chapter feel even darker in comparison.

Suhaira Awais moves between past and present, so the reader slowly discovers how love, family and loss led to that brutal night. The title, “only mine”, hints at a love that is possessive to the very end.
