About this novel

Ain Ishq Jinhan Nu Lag Janda (Urdu: عین عشق جنہاں نوں لگ جاندا) by Suhaira Awais is a complete Urdu romance that mixes heartbreak with plenty of comedy. It opens with Jannat Farzan crying her eyes out on her engagement day, while her best friend Zobia completely fails to understand why.

The novel begins with Zobia trying desperately to calm her friend. “Jannat, my jaan, what happened? Why are you crying like this? And why have you ruined your look? Show me your hands – if you didn’t want to wear bangles, you could have taken them off! Why break them and hurt yourself?” But Jannat is fully devoted to her crying. She has rubbed off her lipstick, pulled her hair loose from its pretty bun, and her non-waterproof eyeliner, mascara and kajal have drawn strange patterns across her fair, chubby cheeks. Finally Zobia loses patience and threatens a slap if another tear falls without an explanation.

“Zobi, I can’t bear it!” Jannat sobs. “Bear what?” “The pain!” Zobia, worried, suggests they go to a doctor right away – and Jannat feels like breaking her head. What would a doctor do? Zobia innocently points out that Jannat herself said she was in pain. “This is your worst habit,” Jannat scolds, still crying – Zobia understands everything except Jannat’s problems.

منگنی کا دن، بہتا کاجل، اور دل کا درد جو ڈاکٹر کے بس کا نہیں۔

At last the truth comes out: the pain is in her heart. Jannat has gathered her courage, put a stone on her heart and agreed to her engagement to Ahsan – but now she can’t bear the weight of that stone. “Pasand is a very, very small word, Zobi – I’m in love with him!” Zobia asks why she said yes when her parents asked for her wishes. Jannat explains: on what basis could she refuse? The man she loves so deeply probably doesn’t even consider her worth his hate. She has no objection to her parents’ choice and trusts that they picked the best person for her – it’s just that her heart won’t listen. When Zobia asks who he is and whether he knows, Jannat begins, “Zobi… I’m really very sorry…”

Suhaira Awais blends tears and laughter beautifully, and the Punjabi title – “those whom love strikes” – sets up an emotional, funny romance.
