“Hazim! Hazim beta, utho, dekho aath baj gaye hain!” The novel opens with Ammi standing by Hazim’s bed, calling him again and again while he refuses to move. When he finally hears the time, he jumps up and complains, “Ammi, maine aapko bola tha mujhe saat baje utha dijiye ga.” Ammi just smiles and walks out without replying. Grumbling, Hazim checks his phone and finds it is only 6:35. He realises his mother has tricked him, smiles despite himself and heads for the shower.

Later, he comes down the stairs in style, phone in hand, and walks to the breakfast table, where Aaila is sitting. The moment they see each other, the mood changes. Aaila gives him a look of complete disgust and goes back to her breakfast. Suhaira Awais has fun describing Hazim: dark wheatish skin, a light beard, brown eyes and thick hair, the kind of looks that would make most girls lose their peace. But on Aaila Sajjad, Hazim Shahzad’s personality has no effect at all.

After breakfast he heads out in a hurry, but Ammi stops him with a task: drop Aaila at university. His tayaji has left his daughter in their care, and it doesn’t look nice for her to be pushed around in buses. “Ji Ammi,” Hazim agrees with great obedience, because he is extremely farmanbardar to his mother. But in his heart he does not want this duty at all, because in Hazim’s words, Aaila is a “bad-dimagh larki.” From this cheerful start, Be Sakhta promises a cousin romance full of taunts, pride and feelings neither of them wants to admit.
