The story is told by Syed Azan Shah Bukhari, who has been tutoring in a wealthy house for just five days, and he is already so fed up that he is thinking of quitting before the month is over. The house looks perfectly clean and tidy, yet there is a strange, unpleasant smell everywhere, the smell of a cat. On top of that, he constantly hears a cat crying, and the people living there behave as if it is the most normal thing in the world.

Azan teaches the grandsons of Mrs Hamdani, a dignified elderly lady. Her only son, Wajahat Hamdani, married her niece Zarnigar, and Mrs Hamdani has three grandsons. Azan asked the boys a few times whose cat it was and who kept it, and asked them to shoo it away, but they just smiled strangely, went out and came back, and the crying continued.

The house is beautifully designed, in the best location, a perfect example of fine architecture. Yet in these five days Azan has felt a strange suffocation there. The lights are dim, the curtains thick, and there is an eerie silence broken only by the cat’s cries: sometimes harsh and angry, sometimes almost innocent. The strangest thing is that he has never actually seen the cat. It never seems to come into the room where he teaches. He is so irritated by the noise that, if he saw it, he says he might throw his heavy book at it.

When the children finish, he asks to speak with Mrs Hamdani. Over tea, she kindly asks him to call her Agha Jani, just as everyone in the house does. Azan politely explains that he has noticed something since he started coming here. Salma Syed builds an uncomfortable mystery one small detail at a time.
