In his short foreword, the writer describes Bewa as a scary, thrilling novel and hopes readers enjoy it. The story begins late at night. Chaudhry Azhar walks into his room humming, tired after a nikah ceremony. He throws his wallet and phone on the bed and goes to change, planning to sleep right away. When he comes out, he hears someone sobbing. Slowly the sound seems to come closer. “Kaun hai yahan?” He looks around, but the room is empty. He checks the corridor and the windows. Guards stand outside, and a deathly silence hangs over the whole haveli.
He tells himself it is only his imagination and lies down, but the sobbing begins again, so close it feels as if someone is sitting by his bed. He tries the light, but the bulb won’t switch on. With his phone’s torch he sees a girl sitting by the bed, crying. Shaking with fear, Azhar grabs a pistol from the side table and demands to know who she is. When she raises her head, he recognises her and stammers, “Sh-Shazia, tum?” “Main bewa,” she says, with tears of blood running from her eyes.
Azhar fires, but the bullets have no effect at all. The girl laughs, then begins to cry again. She accuses him of a great cruelty: before she could even be sent off as a bride, he made her a widow by taking her Akram from her. Today, she says, she has come to be his death. Why, she asks, do powerful rich men forget that the poor are also Allah’s creation? Abaan Dawood mixes horror with a strong message about injustice and pride.
