The novel opens in complete darkness. Zara is locked inside a room, banging on the door and crying, “Dekho tum log mere saath aisa nahin kar sakte,” begging someone to let her out. No one answers. She calls on Allah, because only He can help her now, and then she calls the one name she trusts: “Wali, please aap hi aa jayen, mujhe bacha lein, mujhe andhere se bohat dar lagta hai.” She screams for help again and again, but no one seems to hear her voice.

Sobbing, she is close to fainting when suddenly someone reaches her and catches her before she falls. She can only manage to say, “Wali, aap aa gaye,” and then she loses consciousness. The writer tells us that, in that moment, the man who has arrived is so angry he could kill someone, but holds himself back. He splashes water on her face and keeps begging her to open her eyes, but Zara does not wake up.

Then Sumiya introduces him properly in a few lovely lines. Muhammad Wali Qureshi has always been Zara’s shadow, standing with her in every trouble: only hers, her hamdard, her companion and gham-khwar, her whole world, her friend, and always fearless. The scene then jumps to a normal morning in the house, with someone calling for Zara because they are getting late for university, showing the everyday bond between these characters before the darker story unfolds.

From these first pages, Humsafar Mera promises a protective hero, a heroine with a deep fear of the dark and a mystery about who locked her in.

جو ہر اندھیرے میں ساتھ کھڑا ہو، وہی اصل ہمسفر ہوتا ہے۔
