Agar Tum Saath Ho (Urdu: اگر تم ساتھ ہو) by Isha Gill is a joint-family Urdu romance set in Hayat House, full of cousins and quarrels. Mowahid and Sajal fight like cat and dog, while the stern police inspector Rohaab keeps everyone in line.

It’s a holiday, the weather is lovely, and Sajal is swinging in the lawn with her eyes closed, waiting for the pakoras she asked Bari Mama for. Then Mowahid empties a bucket of water over her head. She chases him round the swing, the two of them race to the table when the pakoras arrive, and Mowahid wins the plate. Sajal runs off to complain to Bare Abba and crashes straight into Rohaab, who looks down at her and tells her she never watches where she’s going.

Isha Gill then introduces the household properly. Hayat House is home to two families. Rafiq Hayat and Shehla have three children: Rohaab, twenty-six; Mowahid, four years younger; and Mowahid’s twin sister Meraj. Ramiz Hayat and Shireen have three daughters: Sania, the eldest at twenty-five; Sajal, the same age as the twins; and Anum, the youngest. Zareen Phupho lives next door with her own family. Her elder son Zarar, Rohaab’s age, lives in England.

Each cousin gets a sketch of their own. Rohaab is a police inspector, so stiff that everyone calls him Akkar Khan. Sania is proud and stubborn and has always had big dreams, which she treats as her right as the eldest. Mowahid and Sajal are in their final year of their master’s, in the same class at the same university, and according to Bari Mama they do nothing but fight.

The 258-page novel is light, full of nok jhok and family life, which makes it a good choice when you want something cheerful.
