About this novel

Raah E Mohabbat (Urdu: راہِ محبت) by Isha Gill is a complete Urdu romance about two very different sisters and the paths love takes. Fareeha is gentle and homely, while Naheed is beautiful, proud and sharp-tongued, and life tests them both.

The novel opens on a scorching afternoon. “Assalam-o-alaikum, Ammi jaan!” Naheed walks in, flings her sandals and bag aside and collapses onto the sofa. “Ammi, when will the light come back? It’s so hot!” Wiping her forehead with her dupatta, she complains that the light goes off for at least an hour every time and today it feels as if the sun has dropped onto the earth – everyone in their area is dying of heat. Her mother, Samina, sighs that the generator is broken too and she keeps telling their father to get it fixed. Naheed goes to the fridge for water, finds even that warm, and slumps back on the sofa until Fareeha brings her a cold glass of juice, which she gulps down without a word of thanks before going upstairs to sleep.

Isha Gill then introduces the family. Samina and Aman have two daughters: Fareeha, three years older, and Naheed. Fareeha is twenty-five and her mother is worried about her marriage, because no suitable proposal has come within the family and her cousins are all married. Fareeha is soft-natured and homely, plain in looks but full of good character, while Naheed is strikingly beautiful and attractive, innocent-looking but quite a firecracker inside. At university many girls envied her beauty, and Naheed was well aware of it.

ایک بہن سادہ اور نرم دل، دوسری حسین اور تیز زبان۔

Fareeha’s sincerity wins everyone over, while Naheed keeps friendship only with people of her own choosing, and only speaks her mind – if the words reach her tongue, they reach the listener’s ears too. Fareeha finished her studies two years ago and stays busy at home; Naheed, after her MSc, is now teaching at a school, since she can’t sit still in one place. The opening ends with Fareeha bravely attempting to cook biryani – a dangerous mission, the writer jokes, because Naheed stands over her the entire time.

Isha Gill writes with humour and warmth, and the title promises each sister will find her own road to love.
