About this novel

Heer (Urdu: ہیر) by Isha Gill is a tender Urdu love story of Heer and Zawar that opens on a sleepless, rainy night. Zawar lies awake thinking of Heer, who is angry with him, while Heer, somewhere else that same night, can’t sleep either.

The rain is pouring down. Zawar opens the window to watch it, but the moon has hidden behind the clouds, the way a certain face hides from him and refuses to come out. He wonders what Heer is doing right now. Is she asleep, writing in her diary, or still sulking over what he said? On the other side, Heer is restless too. She used to laugh at the very word mohabbat, Isha Gill writes, and now she’s drowning in it, without even knowing yet that love is an ocean no one enters without risking going under.

بارش کی رات، روٹھی ہوئی ہیر، اور ایک بے چین زوار۔

By day Heer is a very different girl. Her friends Mehr and Shano find her lost in thought and assume something’s wrong. Heer brushes it off and announces that today they’re going to steal mangoes from the orchard. Mehr is shocked: someone could have died worrying over that face of hers, and all she was thinking about was mangoes! Heer insists that bought mangoes never taste as good as the ones you pick yourself. Before long she’s up in the tree, shaking down mangoes while Shano frets below and Mehr can’t stop laughing.

The novel mixes this playful, carefree side of Heer with a slowly deepening romance, and the title, borrowed from the most famous lovers of Punjab, tells you how seriously Zawar and Heer will end up taking each other. It’s 265 pages.
