About this novel
Zard Mosam Kay Dukh (Urdu: زرد موسم کے دکھ) by Sumaira Shareef Toor is an emotional Urdu social novel about two unprotected sisters. Laiba and Zofishan spend a whole night barricaded in their room while dangerous men roam their house, and the title, the sorrows of a pale season, explains why.
It begins in darkness. The wind slams against the window, and for a moment Laiba is sure the glass has shattered and death itself has come in. Her lips move in silent prayer, her frightened eyes fixed on the window. The two sisters have pushed the cupboard, the sofa and the table against the locked door with all their strength. All night they have listened to wild laughter and threats outside, and the sound of the men smashing whatever is left in the house. Zofishan, trembling, keeps her eyes on her sister’s tear-streaked face, whispering prayers.
اللہ سب سے بڑا محافظ ہے — دو بہنوں کی ایک خوفناک رات۔
Near Fajr they hear the gate open and a car drive away. Laiba thanks Allah for protecting them and wants to step out to look, but Zofishan grabs her hands and begs her not to: what if it’s a trick? So they wait, then make wuzu, pray and recite the Quran, and that brings some peace to their hearts. But the narrator tells us that peace has become rare in their lives. Every moment brings a new test, every wound is fresh, and no one knows how many more trials are still to come.
Sumaira Shareef Toor writes with deep feeling about women left to face the world alone, holding on to dua and faith. It’s a moving, serious read for those who like heartfelt social novels.
