About this novel

Roop Mohabbat Ke (Urdu: روپ محبت کے) by Sidra Arif Khan is a short Urdu story about a devoted wife preparing a birthday surprise for her husband. Then a stranger in an abaya rings the doorbell with a photograph that shatters everything.

The story opens with a woman getting ready in front of the mirror, her face glowing with happiness. She has worn her favourite blue suit, put on beautiful earrings and matching bangles, light make-up, and left her straightened hair loose over her shoulders. Fully ready, she glances at her three-year-old son sleeping in his cot and steps out of the room. Now she is only waiting for her husband to come home.

Today is his birthday, and on this special occasion she plans to tell him something she has never once said aloud in four years of marriage: that she loves him. She has always shown it through her actions, never through words, and whenever he tried to hear it from her, she would beautifully change the subject. Love doesn’t need words, she believes – though she knows that being told you are loved is one of the sweetest feelings in the world. She considers herself lucky to have a husband who loves her so much; she used to think love is never rewarded in this world, but time proved her wrong.

چار سال کی خاموش محبت، ایک سالگرہ کا سرپرائز، اور دروازے پر کھڑی ایک اجنبی عورت۔

The doorbell rings. With one last look at the little but beautifully decorated drawing room, she opens the door with “Happy Birthday Dear Za…” – but instead of her husband, a woman in an abaya stands there. “Ji, aap kaun?” she asks; she has never seen this face before. The woman silently takes out her phone and holds up the screen: it shows a wedding photo. In shock, she steps aside and lets the woman in. The visitor walks into the drawing room and studies the decorations prepared for her husband’s birthday, the blue everywhere, then looks at the wife and quietly compares herself. “Please, sit,” she says. When the wife offers to bring water, the woman’s flat voice stops her: she hasn’t come for anything like that.

Sidra Arif Khan tells a quiet, painful story about trust, secrets and the many forms love can take – exactly what the title promises.
