Itni Achi Hai Meri Qismat Kya (Urdu: اتنی اچھی ہے میری قسمت کیا) by Sara Khan is a short Urdu story about Sofia, a young woman betrayed by the man she loved. Her patient husband later teaches her what real love looks like.

The story opens on a sad December evening. With a cup of tea in her hands, Sofia is once again lost somewhere in the past. In the memory, she is crying and holding Shahvez’s hands: “Shahvez, you don’t understand – please, I’ll die. Why are you doing this to me?” “Uff, Sofi, come on, stop crying. I’m only breaking up with you,” he says irritably, pulling his hands free. Sobbing, she asks why, and he mocks her. Didn’t he love her? Never, he says. He only wanted to break her pride – she had always been so proud of her beauty, and that was all this was about.

The writer doesn’t hold back her judgement of him: he was a wolf in human form, the kind of predator who wears people down piece by piece. With that cruel exchange, Shahvez walks out of her life and leaves her broken on the floor.

Four years later, the story returns to the present. “Sofia, what are you doing out here?” asks Wali, her husband, worried that she is sitting in the cold; it’s getting chilly, so let’s go inside. He gently takes her by the shoulders and lifts her up. Then the writer explains how far Sofia has come. Four years ago, Wali had come home from London; he had liked Sofia from the start and the families settled the match quickly, even though she was not ready. In the early days of the marriage she barely spoke to him, yet Wali kept loving her with endless patience. Slowly, Sofia realised what she had been given: a husband who never once made her feel small, and a life far better than the one she thought she had lost.

Sara Khan writes about heartbreak, gratitude and second chances, and the title – “is my fate really this good?” – sums up Sofia’s wonder at the love she finally found.
