Do Roop Mohabbat Ke (Urdu: دو روپ محبت کے) by Mariya Awan is a long, complete Urdu family novel about identical twin brothers. They look the same but are different in nature from birth, and the novel follows how love takes two very different forms in their lives.

The story opens in a small hospital corridor where Shabbir has been pacing restlessly for ages. His mother, Ishrat Bibi, tells him to sit down calmly – why is he walking circles around the whole hospital? He admits he can’t help it: why hasn’t the doctor come out yet, how long does it take for a baby to be born? Ishrat Bibi reminds him, smiling, that mashallah they’re expecting twins, so it will take time, and his pacing won’t make it any quicker. “Come, sit next to me,” she says, patting the seat beside her. “And pray that all goes well.” “I’m already praying,” Shabbir says.

Just then the lady doctor comes out. “Mubarak ho – you have twin sons!” Shabbir raises his hands in gratitude, then asks after his wife, Aansa. She is fine, the doctor says, but has been kept under observation; the babies are healthy, and once the nurses check them, the family can meet them. Ishrat Bibi blesses the doctor, who smiles and walks away.

Soon the family gathers around the babies. Shabbir’s sister Maarukh exclaims that the boys look exactly alike. Shabbir agrees, but notices their behaviour already differs: one opened his eyes as soon as he saw her, while “poor Asad Sahib” hasn’t opened his eyes at all. Maarukh studies them closely – this one looks like a lively fellow and that one very decent; his eyes are a lovely honey colour, may he turn out just as sweet. Aansa, still weak, asks to hold them too, and Shabbir goes out to bring sweets, since everyone is asking for mithai.

Mariya Awan begins with pure family happiness, and the title hints that these two brothers will one day show love in two very different ways. A good long read for those who enjoy generational family stories.
