Mujhy Ishq Tera Lay Duba (Urdu: مجھے عشق تیرا لے ڈوبا) by Yusra Shah is a long, emotional Urdu romance that opens on a stormy, rainy night. Thunder is rolling, the shops have closed, and a lonely girl named Afreen is walking down an empty road in the rain, her eyes red from crying.

Every night she hears the same gunshot echo in her ears, the sound that took someone from her forever and won’t let her sleep. Tonight it comes again, and she sinks to her knees on the wet road. “Kyun chale gaye tum mujhe tanha kar ke?” she cries. How is she supposed to punish his killer, and where will she even find him? But she isn’t as alone as she thinks. Someone is watching her from the roadside, every move she makes, and the sight of her makes him angry, though he holds himself back.

Then the novel moves to a very different scene: a grand haveli lit up for a celebration. Mir Hassan Shoaib, a man of large ancestral lands, is celebrating the engagement of his elder son, Mir Tariq Hassan, to Uzma Khalid, the daughter of his friend. Tariq liked her at a wedding, his mother Zareena liked her too, and Khalid sahib happily agreed. We meet the rest of the family: sensible, quiet Tariq, his naughty younger brother Faizan, and their little sister Nadia, all deeply loved by their grandparents.

Yusra Shah sets a grieving, angry heroine against a warm family celebration, and you can tell the threads will meet in pain before they meet in love. The title, “your love has drowned me”, says it all.
