About this novel
Kab Hui Teri Rab Janay Mera (Urdu: کب ہوئی تیری میں رب جانے میرا) by Yusra Shah is a long romantic Urdu novel that opens with a midnight mystery. In a deserted forest, a man in a black jacket is dragging a body, looking for a place to bury it.
He finds a pile of loose earth, wipes the sweat from his forehead and starts searching for something to dig with. Suddenly a white light blinds him and police sirens fill the air. Within moments he is surrounded and handcuffed. As they lead him away he insists he didn’t kill anyone: he found the man already dead, he was only moving the body somewhere safe, and he was going to inform the family. Nobody seems to believe him.
آدھی رات، سنسان جنگل، ایک لاش — اور ایک بےگناہی کا دعویٰ۔
The next chapter could hardly be more different. Preesa lies on her stomach on her bed, her long hair spread down her back, lost in a fairy-tale book. She always imagines herself in the hero’s story and dreams of a hero of her own, tall, handsome and fair, just like the ones she reads about. Her phone rings and breaks the spell, and she answers her friend Zaimal with a grumpy “Haan Zaimal, ab kya maut pad gayi tumhein?”
Yusra Shah sets the dark crime scene against a dreamy, very ordinary girl, and you know the two stories are headed for each other. The title, roughly “God knows when I became yours”, suggests a love that arrives without warning and maybe not in the shape Preesa imagines.
