Mahween Novel by Huma Waqas

About this novel

Mahween (Urdu: ماہوین) by Huma Waqas is a romantic Urdu family novel about Mahween Jahanzeb, who has always felt she was searching. At twenty-five she believes she has finally found what she was looking for in one man, and the novel follows that hope.

The novel opens with her friend Hina asking, “Tumhara dimagh theek hai?” Mahween has just told her she is in love with someone she found again on Facebook after five years. Hina met him once, two years ago, at a wedding she went to with her father, and she can’t believe that her sensible friend has fallen for him through a few hints. Mahween admits it with tears in her eyes: “Haan hai.” The trouble is that her family is already looking at rishtay for her, and once her Baba makes up his mind, he doesn’t listen to anyone.

برسوں کی تلاش ختم ہوئی، مگر اب فیصلہ کس کے ہاتھ میں ہے؟

Then a voice calls her from outside, and she walks to her room with heavy steps, the pages of the past turning in her mind. The story goes back to the day she was born. Jahanzeb and his wife Afshan had prayed for a daughter for years. Their first son had died only days after birth, and they were then blessed with Sheraz and Waqar, but every prayer after that was for a girl. When Afshan finally places the tiny baby in his arms, Jahanzeb looks up at the sky with tears of shukar and kisses her forehead. She is their shehzadi from the very first moment.

That contrast drives the opening: a daughter loved more than anything, and a father whose love may make him the hardest person to convince when she chooses someone herself. Huma Waqas writes in short, emotional scenes, and you know from the first chapter that Mahween’s mohabbat will be tested by her own family.
