Dil Galti Kar Betha Hai Novel by Huma Waqas

About this novel

Dil Galti Kar Betha Hai (Urdu: دل غلطی کر بیٹھا ہے, “the heart has made a mistake”) by Huma Waqas is an Urdu romance about Daneen and her new husband, a famous superstar. It opens in a car, where Daneen Sikandar sits stiff and silent beside Zardad Haroon, a man she can’t stand.

Zardad looks completely at ease. Daneen, staring out of the window, feels as if he is poison. When he asks if she wants some water she says just one word, “Nahi.” Could she ever trust this man? She doesn’t think so. She glances at her own dusky hands, then at his fair ones gripping the steering wheel, and quietly hides hers under her dupatta. Fate plays strange games, Huma Waqas writes. Daneen never imagined she would end up married to Zardad Haroon.

دل نے غلطی کی، اور اب اس کی سزا ساتھ بیٹھی ہے۔

As the car drives on, Daneen goes over it all again. Maybe Zain was right, she thinks: whatever it was, love or a mistake, he no longer wanted to marry her. Her heart made the mistake, and the man beside her is the price. Her eyes are sore from crying, and the past comes flooding back.

The novel then jumps back years to show who Zardad is. At twelve, he watches a gang of boys beating his fifteen-year-old brother Shazar. Quiet until then, he suddenly charges in, flings one boy aside and punches the others so hard they run for it, while Shazar stares at his little brother in amazement. It tells you something about the man Daneen has married, long before she gets to know him.

It’s 347 pages, a love-after-marriage story told partly in flashback.
