Ajab Bandhan Novel by Huma Waqas

About this novel

Ajab Bandhan (Urdu: عجب بندھن, “a strange bond”) by Huma Waqas is a light, funny Urdu wedding romance full of family shaadi chaos and teasing. Daniyal is dragged to a wedding to see the girl his mother has chosen, and the girl who keeps making his life miserable turns out to be her.

It opens with a bowl of salan going down Daniyal’s white shirt. The culprit is Maham, small, slim and full of mischief, who says “sorry” with her teeth in her lip and laughter still in her eyes. Daniyal never wanted to come to Intisha’s wedding at all. This time, though, his Amma‘s stubbornness won, because she has picked a girl from the family for him and wants him to see her. He hasn’t even met that girl yet, and in two days this one has already made him miserable, running around the house, snatching things from children, laughing at the top of her voice.

شادی کا ہنگامہ، ایک شرارتی لڑکی، اور ایک ضدی ماں کی پسند۔

Maham is in no way sorry. She offers to wash the shirt if he’ll take it off, and when her friend asks who he is, she says he’s her mother’s cousin’s son and pulls a face: handsome maybe, but the kind of man who keeps a temper on the tip of his nose all day.

Then comes the turn that sets up the whole novel. When Daniyal complains to his mother, Nazish, and asks whether she couldn’t find any other girl, she points across the courtyard, at the girl who is at that moment snatching a packet of chips from a five-year-old. That’s the one. Daniyal is horrified. Nazish is delighted; she thinks the house will be full of laughter with a girl like that in it.

At 100 pages, Ajab Bandhan is a quick read, with plenty of nok jhok between a serious hero and a heroine who never takes him seriously.
