About this novel
Mohay Piya Milan Ki Aas (Urdu: موہے پیا ملن کی آس) by Huma Waqas is a long Urdu family romance about a young woman and a hurt, angry little boy. She patiently tries to win the heart of Jaaj, while a quiet tension grows between her and his father, Najaf.
The novel begins with Afreen walking into a room with a tray in her hands. A small boy sits with his face hidden in his knees. She smiles at the sight, places the tray on the side table and gently strokes his hair – golden-brown and silky, exactly like his mother’s, because Najaf’s hair is dark. Touching it gives her a strange, soft feeling of motherhood. “Jaaj, Jaaj,” she whispers. “Jaaj, look, dinner’s ready.”
The boy lifts his head and glares at her, angry tears in his eyes. “No, I don’t want to eat!” he shouts, the veins in his small throat standing out, as if he can’t bear her for a single moment. “I’m your mom, Jaaj,” Afreen says softly, touching his head again – and he pushes her hand away hard. “No, you’re not!” There is nothing but hatred in his voice; at that moment he doesn’t seem like a four-year-old at all. “Leave me alone!” he screams so loudly that she gets up flustered, signals that she’ll leave the tray there, and slips out of the room.
ایک ننھا بچہ، ایک صبر کرنے والی ماں، اور ایک خاموش رشتہ۔
Outside, she leans against the staircase railing, breathing deeply. “What happened? He isn’t eating?” Najaf asks from the stairs – hair messy, half-sleeved shirt with its cuffs folded – looking troubled himself. Afreen shakes her head. “Don’t worry, I’ll try again in a while,” she says, putting on a reassuring face, and turns away. “Afreen,” he calls after her, his voice full of embarrassment. “Thank you… thank you for everything.” She hides her own discomfort behind a forced smile and offers to bring his dinner, though he says he’ll eat later.
Huma Waqas writes with tenderness about blended families, grief and patience, and the title – “the longing to meet my beloved” – promises a slow, emotional love story.
