About this novel
Koi Tum Sa Nahi (Urdu: کوئی تم سا نہیں) by Hamna Mohsin is a short Urdu romance about Daniya and Hamza, secretly married by nikah for two months. An aunt and a childhood engagement stand between them and telling the world the truth.
The story opens with a frightened question: “Who are you? Why have you brought me here?” Daniya’s eyes are covered with a blindfold and her hands are tied behind her back. No answer comes. Hamza sits calmly, watching her panic, then steps forward and removes the blindfold. “Hamza, tum?” Daniya shouts angrily. “Thank God you recognised me,” he says softly. “For three days you’ve been refusing to recognise your own husband.”
“Untie my hands,” Daniya demands, and he does. She calls his little stunt plain badtameezi and says she wants to go home. “Not like this – I won’t let you go,” Hamza says, beginning to lose his temper too. Daniya runs to the door, but it’s locked. “Open it.” “No,” he says, settling comfortably into a chair. “Hamza, please, I have to go,” she pleads, close to tears – but he is stubborn in a way she hadn’t expected.
دو مہینے کا خفیہ نکاح، روٹھی ہوئی بیوی، اور ایک بند دروازہ۔
Finally the real reason for her anger comes out. “I don’t want to listen to anything,” Daniya says. “It’s been two months since our nikah. When will you tell your Aapi about it?” Hamza explains how much his Aapi means to him: after his parents died, she raised him like a mother, and he can’t find the courage to tell her. “That’s exactly the problem,” Daniya says sulkily. “Don’t tell her anything – she’ll marry you to your childhood fiancée, Farwa, and I’ll quietly put up with a co-wife.” Hamza smiles and promises nothing like that will ever happen. And why has she ignored his calls for three days? “What’s the point of your promises?” she asks.
Hamna Mohsin keeps this one light and full of lovers’ tiffs, and the title – “there’s no one like you” – sums up Hamza’s feelings perfectly.
