About this novel

Dil Ka Rishta (Urdu: دل کا رشتہ) by Hamna Mohsin is a complete Urdu romance about cousins Neelam and Zawar Shah, married by nikah for a promise. They agreed only to fulfil their grandfather’s wish, and a family property dispute keeps pushing them further apart.

The novel opens with Neelam waking up in a locked room. The room is clean and quite large, and she is lying on a bed. She begins shouting at the top of her voice, and hearing her, Zawar Shah walks in. “What kind of nonsense is this? Why have you brought me here?” Neelam yells. “What kind of question is that? You’re my wife,” Zawar replies calmly. Neelam isn’t having it: she wants nothing to do with him – he knows this nikah happened only because their grandfather wanted it, and now that Dada isn’t alive, the nikah won’t last either. “Let me go.”

Zawar asks, almost helplessly, why she is spoiling their relationship over a property fight between her father and his uncle. She refuses to talk. “Just shut up, I’m leaving – and if you ever kidnap me again…” “Don’t worry,” Zawar cuts in, “I won’t kidnap you again.” The door is locked; he smiles, opens it at her demand, and tries one last time: such stubbornness isn’t good; leave the elders’ matters to the elders and let us start our life. “Do whatever you want – I’m not interested in you,” Neelam answers, and when he offers to drop her home, she storms off in anger while Zawar watches her go with longing.

دادا کی خواہش پر ہوا نکاح، اور بڑوں کی جائیداد کی لڑائی۔

Back at her hostel, Neelam tells her roommate Sana everything: Zawar treats her like a little child he can win over, and dreams of her living with him just because their grandfather wanted it. Sana is blunt – Zawar is barely matric-pass while Neelam will soon graduate, and he’ll probably demand the property soon. So why not end the relationship herself? Because, Neelam explains, their grandfather added a condition to the nikah: whichever side ends it must give up the family’s Islamabad house, office and farmhouse – crores’ worth of property – so that the relationship would always last.

Hamna Mohsin sets up a classic “tied by a will” romance with a stubborn heroine and a patient, persistent hero.
